A woman has found herself in an unusual situation when it comes to a beloved family recipe.

In a post shared on Reddit’s “Am I the A——?” forum, the woman wrote about marrying into a family that has a “secret pasta and red sauce recipe” that is so well-protected among her spouse’s relatives that she received it as a gift on their wedding day.

“Whenever there are family functions, we switch up who makes the recipe, each of us putting our own twist on it,” the woman explained.

“Since getting married, I have gotten close to my spouse’s cousin. We hang out often — she’s a bit of a mentor to me. I asked when it would be her turn to make the recipe because she’s a great cook and I want to try her twist on it,” she continued, before revealing that she found out the cousin “never got the secret recipe.”

According to the OP (original poster), the family has a strict tradition that this secret pasta recipe is only passed down to married members of the family.

“She has asked for the recipe but keeps getting told, ‘when you get married,’ ” the OP explained. “She’s in her early 50s and has repeatedly expressed no interest in marriage.”

Things quickly blew up ahead of the holidays when the OP and her spouse’s cousin discussed making a big batch of the pasta in December.

“(She) asked if she could trade portions for something special she makes. I agreed but then thought to ask if she just wanted the recipe instead,” the OP wrote. “She was born into the family. I don’t think there should be a restriction on a family recipe that requires you to get married. So I gave it to her.”

According to the post, the rest of the family found out that she had shared the secret recipe almost immediately after, and her mother-in-law and aunts-in-law told her that they were angry because the cousin hadn’t “earned” the recipe.

“One of the cousins’ married sisters blew up at me over text. Father-in-law gets where I was coming from, but said it wasn’t my place. My spouse doesn’t care either way. But I earned myself the cold shoulder at Thanksgiving over this,” the OP concluded her post.

The Reddit community was quick to agree that the OP wasn’t “the a——,” particularly because of how “mean” the family tradition is.

“Listen, if the family is going to blow up Thanksgiving over a mean girl ‘tradition,’ so be it,” one person replied. “I would probably get together with Unmarried Cousin and have a good time with good food. Damn, that family is full of haters.”

“The elders must be punishing her for not meeting their expectations,” another person chimed in. “I say kudos to you for bringing the family secret to light. That is horrible to do to a family member, making her feel less than.”

“That’s a ridiculous, discriminatory tradition that punishes someone for not adhering to the ‘norm’ in the family,” another commenter wrote. “Glad you did it.”
