Baker Sparks Debate After Refusing To Make Sisters Wedding Cake For Free

A baker has ignited a debate after revealing she wanted to charge her sister for making her wedding cake.

Sophie, the owner of a small bakery, wrote to the popular blog Bright Side explaining that her sister demanded that she bake her wedding cake for her nuptials next month.

She explained that her creations take, ‘time, effort and creativity’ and planned to charge her sister $500.

Sophie said the rate a significant discount for the tireless work involved in creating a cake with hand-painted flowers.

‘I want people to understand that it’s not just sugar and flour, it’s my livelihood,’ she added.

However, Anna refused to pay the fee and insisted that her sister bake the cake as a ‘favor,’ considering they’re siblings.

Sophie said she was shocked by the request and her fury only deepened when she learned that Anna was planning to take her design and send it to another baker, without paying her sister or giving her credit for the idea.

‘I was shaking with anger. She wasn’t just refusing payment: she was trying to steal the idea of my work and claim it as her own,’ Sophie wrote.

The owner of a small bakery sent in her dilemma to the blog Bright Side to ask for help

‘I spent three days handcrafting the cake in good faith, and she planned to take that labor and profit from it indirectly.’

Sophie said that she didn’t know whether to confront her sister or bake the cake anyway.

She confessed that even though she loved Anna, she valued her work and wanted to be valued for it.

‘Was I wrong to feel furious and consider calling off the order entirely?’ Sophie asked.

Readers sounded off in the comments, with some arguing that Sophie should bake the cake for free as a gift to her sister on her big day.

However others protested that it was unfair to ask someone to dedicate their time just because they’re siblings.

Sophie shared that even though she was upset that her sister wanted her to bake the cake as a ‘favor,’ she was angrier that sister Anna then sent the design to another baker without her permission (file photo)

‘She is your sister, it could have been your gift to her. She is worth the 500,’ one comment read.

‘And maybe she isn’t. It’s not the cost, it’s the time. A lot of time. People don’t realize how much time is involved,’ one disagreed.

‘And? she is her SISTER,’ wrote a third.

A Bright Side writer wrote back, urging Sophie to step back from the situation and communicate her thoughts with her sister.

‘Remember, family love doesn’t mean sacrificing respect or professionalism. Teaching those lessons is valuable for both you and your sister,’ the writer added.

Last year, the average cost of a wedding cake was around $540 per wedding website The Knot.

However, for larger creations prices can edge north of $900, with prices even higher in large cities according to the Brides website.
