Orange Juice Affects Gene Activity, New Study Finds

According to МedicalХpress20 healthy adults participated in the experiment. For two months, they drank about two cups (400 ml) of 100% orange juice daily.
The scientists then analyzed samples of their immune cells, tracking the functioning of than 1,700 genes. The findings pointed to molecular changes associated with inflammation, blood pressure regulation and the body’s use of fat.
The researchers found that volunteers with normal body weight were likely to have changes in genes associated with inflammation, while overweight people were likely to have changes that affect fat metabolism and energy metabolism.
The authors attribute these effects to flavonoids, plant compounds found in citrus fruits, berries, tea and cocoa. Flavonoids have antioxidant properties and, as previous research suggests, may have beneficial effects on the cardiovascular system.
However, the researchers note the limitations of the work: the experiment was conducted on a small sample and without a control group, so it cannot be unequivocally stated that the identified changes were caused specifically by orange juice.
Nutritionist Nicolette Pace emphasized thatOrange juice ‘isn’t a miracle cure’ but can be part of a healthy diet in moderation. According to her, the sugar content does not cover the potential benefits of the drink.
