A swinging ride at Canobie Lake Park malfunctioned over the weekend, leaving 12 riders stranded mid-air, a spokesperson for the Salem, N.H., park confirmed to PEOPLE.

The 12 guests were riding the Time Winder when it experienced a “power issue” at approximately 10:45 p.m. local time on Saturday, Oct. 25. In a statement shared with PEOPLE, a spokesperson for the park confirmed the riders were safely rescued by the Salem Fire Department following the malfunction.

“The 12 riders who were approximately 30 feet in the air were removed by members of the Salem, N.H., Fire Department in conjunction with the Park’s Maintenance Team in accordance with Park procedures,” the statement reads.

As stated on the park’s website and confirmed by the park’s spokesperson, the attraction is “currently closed until further notice.”

The Time Winder is described as a “dynamic family ride with four rotating arms, each carrying eight gondolas for up to 32 passengers,” per the park’s website. It’s meant to create a “hypnotic” movement as a result of the arms “swinging in circular motions around horizontal axes.”

There were no injuries reported as a result of the malfunction or during the rescue process, the Salem Fire Department told local outlet WMUR News 9.

Battalion Chief Corey Ward reportedly said the rescue was the first one that the Salem Fire Department had to carry out at the park in his entire 18-year career, per the outlet.

The fire department reportedly used a tower ladder and a man lift to get the riders safely down.

PEOPLE has reached out to the Salem Fire Department for comment.

Canobie Lake Park is the oldest theme park in New Hampshire, having opened in 1902 as a trolley park and later as a “pleasure resort” for families to enjoy attractions like canoeing, sporting events, picnics and more.

Under new ownership, the park was completely renovated and expanded in 1958, with the new owners introducing new rides and games.

According to the park’s official Instagram account, the Time Winder ride opened in the summer of 2024.
