A Mysterious Glow At The Heart Of The Milky Way May Hold The Key To The Universe’s Greatest Mysteries

uaetodaynews.com — A mysterious glow at the heart of the Milky Way may hold the key to the universe’s greatest mysteries

This widespread gamma-ray glow has been a mystery for decades, but scientists now offer two possible explanations: either it results from the collision of dark matter particles, or from the rapid rotation of neutron stars.

If the source is proven to be dark matter, this will be the first tangible discovery of this mysterious substance that fills the universe, even though we cannot see it directly. Dark matter represents a fundamental pillar in our understanding of the universe, as it is responsible for the cohesion of galaxies and the formation of the cosmic structure.

In this regard, Professor Joseph Silk, one of the leading researchers in this field, explains: “Dark matter dominates the universe and controls the fate of galaxies, so searching for evidence of it is a top priority for understanding the nature of the universe.”

In a recent study, scientists were able to draw a detailed map of the expected distribution of dark matter in our galaxy. These maps indicate that in the distant past, the central regions of the galaxy witnessed a massive accumulation of dark matter, which increased the chances of its particles colliding and producing the gamma rays that we observe today.

But the alternative explanation still stands. It is possible that neutron stars – very dense stars rotating at enormous speeds – are the real source of this radiation. However, this explanation requires the presence of a larger number of these stars than we currently observe.

To resolve this scientific controversy, researchers plan to study the energy of gamma rays emitted. If its energy is high, the most likely source is neutron stars. If it is low energy, this will strongly indicate dark matter.

Professor Silk adds: “We hope that future studies will reveal the truth. We may be able to confirm one of the two theories, or we may encounter a new, deeper mystery, and this is what makes science interesting.”
