Unlike almost every other item at Costco, a new product from the bulk retailer is sparking some controversy as customers claim it might be priced too high.

Spending nearly $18 on Costco’s new Kirkland Signature Wedge Salad With Bacon & Dressing can feel like a lot. With many budget-friendly bagged salads and ready-made meals available at Costco and beyond, paying more than $15 for something as simple as a wedge of iceberg lettuce is understandably giving shoppers pause.

However, once you break down the cost, ingredients, prep time, and convenience, that number begins to make more sense, and it might even be worth giving the new item a try.

The pre-packed wedge salad is sold in Costco’s deli section for about $7.50 per pound. Since most salad kits weigh roughly 2.4 pounds, the total usually comes out to around $17.90 total, although some kits are priced closer to $15.

Each kit contains four half heads of iceberg lettuce, yielding eight servings when cut into wedges — or four larger servings if you prefer two wedges per serving. The available toppings include chopped bacon, blue cheese crumbles, crispy onions, whole grape tomatoes, and a packet of blue cheese dressing.

Some commenters described the salad as “$17 for lettuce” or “something you could make for a fraction of the cost.” A few even poked fun at the title, jokingly pointing out that for the price, “the steak was missing.”

At the same time, another wave of viewers defended the salad’s appeal — who knew a wedge could be so controversial — pointing out that it’s convenient, ready to serve, and, as one shopper put it, “the easiest dinner win of the week.”

When you compare the price of this kit with what you’d be paying at another affordable grocery store, it starts to sound like more of a steal. Let’s say you buy all the ingredients needed to make this salad at Walmart: two heads of iceberg lettuce ($2.57 each), a 10-ounce package of grape tomatoes ($1.88), crumbled blue cheese ($3.28), pre-cooked bacon crumbles ($4.98), fried onions ($2.94), and blue cheese dressing ($4.18). That comes out to $22.40 — more than Costco’s price — and it relies on you choosing the least expensive options at Walmart, like shelf-stable bacon crumbles.

If you head to a pricier grocery store like Whole Foods, the total price for recreating this salad will increase even more. You’re also paying for convenience at Costco; everything is already gathered in one place, with no need for planning on your part.

This new salad isn’t a dramatic money-saving hack that will make or break your grocery budget, but if you’re hosting friends or cooking dinner for a family and want to shave a few dollars off the cost of a wedge while saving yourself some time, this will do the trick.

It’s also crucial to note that this item is arriving at the bulk retailer, complete with the word “steakhouse” in its name, at a time when home cooks are looking to save money by cooking at home rather than dining out.
