Flinn Sessions, a head chef on a superyacht in the south of France, died by drowning. He was 22.

Sessions died on June 9, 2023 after he fell off the side of the Atlantico yacht, where he had been working for two months, while it was docked in France. He is survived by his mother Michelle Fish, stepfather, older sister and twin brother.

At the time of his death, post-mortem examinations in France and the UK both found he died of drowning. The full details surrounding his death were confirmed this week by Coroner Brendan Allen during an inquest on Wednesday, Oct. 22.

Allen determined during Wednesday's inquest hearing that on the night of his death, Sessions went to several bars with fellow crew members and drank beer and shots, BBC reported. Allen told the hearing that Sessions knocked glasses off a table and that his friends had asked a waiter not to serve him any more drinks.

That night, CCTV footage showed Sessions on the dock where the ship was moored, La Ciotat, near Marseille in France. He fell into the water and, according to the footage, swam to the back of the yacht. He was found dead in the water in the morning.

Allen concluded that Sessions’ death was the result of an accident: “While socialising with friends and colleagues, he had consumed a considerable amount of alcohol,” he said. "From the fact the CCTV clearly shows Flinn was alone at the time he suffered the fall from the quayside, he wasn't suffering any ill health and this was clearly not something he intended to happen, Flinn died as the consequence of an accident so that will be the conclusion that I will record."

Born in Wimborne, Dorset in England, is remembered as a “popular boy and a kind son,” local news outlet Bournemouth Echo reports. His mother told the outlet, “He gave us a lifetime of love, laughter and pride.” Fish said he found a job “doing what he loved” in cooking and got into the profession by working at local pubs.

Family and friends honor Sessions’ by gathering on a beach to light lanterns on the anniversary of his death. His brother and mother have tattoos dedicated to the late chef.

He is buried next to his father, who died when Sessions was 8 years old. “We visit every week and there will always be fresh flowers for them,” Fish said.
