NEED TO KNOW

  • John Heald, the brand ambassador for Carnival Cruise Line, shared a behind-the-scenes look into the Carnival Conquest’s lost and found after a sailing
  • Among the items left behind were sunglasses, phones, children’s toys, clothing and much more
  • Heald explained that items may take a while to be returned to guests because they have to “go through customs and all the other paperwork has to be done”

John Heald, the brand ambassador and senior cruise director of Carnival Cruise Lineis lifting the curtain on what happens to all the sunglasses, wallets, and personal items that get left behind after a sailing.

Around two hours after the Carnival Conquest completed its debarkation process, Heald shared a video to Facebook on Oct. 13 showing curious cruisers some of the things that ended up in the back office of guest services after passengers had forgotten them in their cabins.

“Just look at all these sunglasses here,” he said while sifting through a cardboard box full of glasses, which sat within a bigger drawer cluttered with miscellaneous items. “Stuff is still coming back from the cabins — valuable things like jewelry and glasses and a walkie talkie.”

Among other items were multiple phones, a few clothing items that had been left hanging in closets, shoes, children’s toys and an abundance of water bottles.

“It’s all been catalogued by somebody with fabulous hair,” Heald quipped before panning to his colleague. “Then it all has to go back to Miami. But it won’t go off this cruise, it will go off next cruise because it has to go through customs and all the other paperwork has to be done. And then — and THEN — we will try to get it back to you.”

Last October, Heald shared a further glimpse into what happens after items are “found or recovered and sent back to the guest services desk.” Reiterating that the items take about a week to go through customs, he showed the typical green bags that are used to store the items in the process.

“In the green bags are everything that is left behind,” he explained, showing the meticulously labeled collection of bags alongside bins full of forgotten items from the past week alone. “Just to show you, we have a Gucci purse, we have more purses, we have iPads, we have an iPhone, another phone, a Samsung this time, and another one, some jewelry, and all the bits and pieces.”

Once the items are gathered up, he explained that they are sorted, put into ships, and returned to the customer as quickly as possible. And as a message to all the cruisers who have sent him a message wondering why they haven’t received an update on their lost items, Heald encouraged them to think of the team behind-the-scenes.

As he put it, “they are all very, very, very, very hardworking people and you wouldn’t believe some of the things that people have left behind.”
