The NFL broke viewership records during Thanksgiving Day. According to Nielsen ratings, an average of nearly 45 million people watched the three NFL games held on Thanksgiving this year, breaking the previous record of 34.5 million viewers set last year.

“This is especially important on unique days, like playoff games and Thanksgiving, when people are coming together ,” Hans Schroeder, the NFL’s executive vice president and chief operating officer, told reporters.
The reason behind these huge rates was the record-setting thrilling match between the Dallas Cowboys and the Kansas City Chiefs.
That game, which averaged 57.2 million viewers on CBS, is now the most-watched NFL regular season game of all time. It peaked with 61.3 million viewers in its final moments.
The match between the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions briefly broke the NFL regular season record when it attracted 47.7 million viewers earlier in the day on Fox before the confrontation between the Cowboys and Chiefs.
The final Thanksgiving game between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Balti Ravens on NBC and Telemundo attracted about 28.4 million viewers.
viewers also tuned in to Thanksgiving games via livestream than ever before, according to the NFL, which said the livestream generated, on average, 2.2 million viewers — an increase of 58% from last year.
Overall, viewership for NFL games is up significantly this year compared to last, a sign that soccer remains the most popular TV show in the United States by far, and that it will continue to drive the survival of linear TV as people turn to live streaming.
Over the course of the twelfth week of the regular season, the matches averaged than 17 million viewers per game, an increase of 6% compared to last year, according to Schroeder.
CBS Sports President David Pearson said the network is experiencing its best season since the NFL returned to CBS in 1998.
Part of this increase in viewership can be attributed to improvements in Nielsen’s methodology, which the NFL says captures viewership accurately now than it did just a few months ago.
Last September, the League accused Nielsen of underestimating the number of viewers for football matches over the years.
The measurement giant has launched a new measurement system “Big Data + Dashboard” for live broadcasting, which combines data from smart TVs, as well as Nielsen’s representation panel, when calculating the number of viewers. The NFL and its media partners seem happy with this update.
The number of viewers for Big Moments continues to rise on live TV, even though people are watching live programs via streaming.
Viewings for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on NBC and Peacock this year broke records with 34.3 million total viewers, an 8% increase year over year.
“What really drives this business is the unique ability of sports to bring people together and create shared experiences in real time,” said Mike Mulvihill, president of insights and analytics at Fox Sports. “These shared experiences become rarer and valuable when there is so much media content that pushes people into isolated experiences.”
