Eat Just is making meat-free meals accessible for all Americans.
On Thursday, the company, which also released its plant-based eggs earlier this year, announced that it’s rolling out Just Meatits chicken alternative, in than 3,000 Walmart stores across the U.S. and in Puerto Rico. And they insist you won’t be able to tell the difference.
“This is the first time most consumers prefer plant-based chicken over animal chicken,” Josh Tetrick, the company’s co-founder and CEO, shared. “That changes things.”
Tetrick pointed to the Nichols Research it commissioned in spring 2024, which compared its product head-to-head with a leading frozen chicken strip. According to the brand, 23 participants were asked to choose their preferred product based on taste, texture, appearance, and an overall rating. According to Tetrick, Just Meat was chosen “ often” than the conventional chicken in every category.
“It cooks the same, it pulls the same, it tastes the way chicken should taste,” he noted. According to Tetrick, it took years for the team to perfect their formula, which he says is designed for those seeking a sustainable alternative to traditional meat. And really, it could be the right choice for individuals and for the planet’s health. As Food & Wine reported in October, the 2025 EAT-Lancet Reportwhich analyzed data from than 200,000 people worldwide, found that the Planetary Health Diet (PHD) could save billions of lives. And guess what? It also calls for less meat.
“The PHD is rich in plants: whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and legumes comprise a large proportion of foods consumed, with only moderate or small amounts of fish, dairy, and meat recommended,” the researchers explained in their work. They added that the diet is based “entirely on the direct effects of different diets on human health, not on environmental criteria.”
Those interested in trying Eat Just’s new product can now find it at Sprouts, H-E-B, Giant, Hannaford, Albertsons United, Tops, Stop & Shop, Price Chopper, Andronico’s, Bristol Farms, Mom’s Organic Market, and Mother’s Market, and now in those Walmart stores, too.
“Walmart is the largest retailer in the world and sells chicken than anyone in the U.S.,” Tetrick said. “If we are serious about scaling a different kind of chicken across America with everyday people, we need to make it work there.”
Just Meat is available by the half pound in Original, Buffalo, Sesame Ginger, and Chili Lime. And if you need ideas for preparing it, follow Tetrick’s lead. “I grew up in Birmingham, eating chicken strips dipped in a version of Alabama white sauce. Today, I put a little olive oil in a pan, toss in a half pound of the chicken, cook it till it gets those little crispy bits, and then dip it into any southern-style sauce.”
