Mitch Marsh Eyes Off Shock Recall Ahead Of The Ashes Series – After Joking He Would Be ‘six Beers Deep’ By Lunch On Opening Day Of First Test In Perth

Australian selectors have not ruled out a Mitch Marsh comeback to the Test side, despite the all-rounder joking that he would be ‘six beers deep’ by lunch on the opening day of the first Ashes Test in Perth next month.

Marsh was dropped after the Boxing Day Test against India last summer, but has been in fine form across ODI and T20 cricket since.

The Australian T20 captain has averaged more than 60 in ODIs in 2025 and 71.50 in T20Is – and now may play a few Sheffield Shield matches for Western Australia to give himself a chance of a Test recall.

It comes after Australian coach Andrew McDonald revealed the selectors had not ‘given up’ on Marsh as a Test player.

The 34-year-old has played 46 Tests for Australia but with a batting average of just 28.53, he’s never been able to hold down a spot long-term, despite a few memorable knocks.

Marsh does however have a very good record against England, with three centuries and a batting average of 47.07 from ten Tests.

The door has not been closed on Mitch Marsh’s Test career, according to the selectors

Marsh’s recent scintillating form in white-ball cricket could get him back into the Test XI

One of his more memorable knocks came in the 2023 Ashes series in England when a recalled Marsh smashed 118 from as many balls at Headingly after arriving at the crease with Australia in trouble at 4/85.

His big-hitting has prompted former England captain Michael Vaughan to say his ‘Baz ball’ style could help Australia this summer.

Marsh hasn’t played a red ball game since he was dropped last summer however, and joked he would be ‘six beers deep’ by lunch on the first day of the Peth Test.

‘I was hoping for a month off after this to be honest,’ Marsh joked.

‘I haven’t given it much thought, to be honest. It’s been a busy schedule with our white-ball tour. I’m just focused on this series for now.

‘I do love playing for Western Australia, so we’ll just see where it lands at the end of this series.’

Marsh would have to make the Test team solely as a batsman however, because hasn’t bowled a single over in any cricket since last year’s Boxing Day Test.

McDonald said Marsh could still wear his baggy green again.

‘We still haven’t given up on Mitch Marsh’s Test career,’ McDonald said.

‘So, what would the prep look like for him? It would have to be through white ball or maybe some Shield cricket after white ball if he isn’t in that first squad and then (he) he can press his claim through that.

‘There’s Shield (rounds) five and six also when we’re playing the Test matches, where players that aren’t in the first Test will obviously go to work then.’

Marsh will lead Australia on Wednesday night against India in a T20 international in Canberra, with Josh Philippe set for a return after Matt Short underwent a finger operation.

Key spinner Adam Zampa could miss the entire series as he awaits the birth of his second child.
